The public works department is replacing a failing sewer force main on Sandy Beach Road in Petersburg. The force main pipe carries pumped sewage from a lift station to a higher point in the collection system so that it can flow by gravity. The existing force was made in the 1980s and has three leaks, which had to be repaired in the last two years. Karl Hagerman, director of public works, said the department would like to be done before winter sets in.
