The Petersburg Boys Basketball team continued their winning ways this past weekend against the Craig Panthers. In game one, the Vikings came out of the gates with a dominating defensive display, limiting the Panthers to zero points in the first quarter. "I liked the fact that we were able to put pressure on the ball and take away the avenues and places they were trying to move without gambling too much," head coach Rick Brock said. The Vikings allowed only nine points in the first half, taking...
Seeing their first wins of the season, the Petersburg Lady Vikings got off to a 6-4 start against the Craig Lady Panthers. Early in the second quarter, the Vikings had a 8-4 lead. After that, the Lady Panthers went on a 11-0 run, to take a 17-8 lead and hold the Lady Vikings scoreless in the final 6:35 of the half. The Vikings remained scoreless until about the six minute mark of the third quarter. “We were right in it for the first quarter and then half of the second. We were holding [the Panthers] off for a little bit but our shots w...

The Petersburg High School Cheer squad took the court for only the second time this season, which was also their first time performing on the road this season. Homecoming is always a raucous and fun time but this season, the Vikings brought a little more juice to the festivities compared to previous years. "We were louder, we brought a lot more energy to the games. We got a lot of compliments from basketball players, parents that came there about how loud we were, how much energy we brought and...

The Lady Vikings aimed to get their first wins of the season this past weekend against their rival, the Lady Wolves, during their Homecoming weekend in Wrangell. In game one, the Vikings had good flow offensively and were applying pressure on the Lady Wolves ball handlers to take a 10-6 lead after the first quarter. "[The Wolves] were in a 3-2 zone against us at the start of the game – I felt like we got good looks off of that. The kids were well prepared to go against a defense like that," h...

So far this season, the Petersburg Boys Basketball team have played all road games, six games in total. They've won four of their first six road games. In game one, the Vikings beat the Chiefs 44-26, a wire to wire victory. “From the beginning of the game, I felt like we really tried to push the tempo against them. I think that might’ve caught them a little off guard,” head coach Rick Brock said. “We had a little bit more confidence than they did and we were able to set the temp from the beginning.” Prior to Metlakatla, the Vikings played mu...
The Petersburg High School Girls Varsity began their season on the road against the Metlakatla Miss Chiefs this past weekend. First games of the season are interesting because sometimes, you don’t know what the other team has planned and vice versa. “In game one, [the Miss Chiefs] came out in a 3-2 zone, which was a surprise because they’ve historically ran a 2-3 zone,” head coach Matt Pawuk said. “[Our] offense admittedly against the zone was not very effective.” It wasn’t just the offense that had its struggle in game one, it was also the...

Just before the holiday break, Viking Swim Club competed in the Ketchikan Invitational, along with teams from Ketchikan, Sitka, Juneau-Douglas and Craig. As the team has done all season, Petersburg swimmers continued to shed more time compared to their previous meets. "We have been training these kids fairly hard. They've been doing a lot of different training," head coach Derek Gibb said. "I've already told them Christmas training is probably going to be hard, so they kinda know what to...

For two of the three Vikings that qualified for state (Tanner Caulum and Edgar Olsen), this was their first time competing in the ASAA State Championships this past weekend in Anchorage. Regardless of how the season ended, this was a good experience for the guys to get under their wrestling belts. "I tried to calm myself down. Breathing helped a lot. It was my first time and I just told myself nobody really expects anyone to do good except for Carney because he's defending that state championshi...

The Petersburg High School Boys Basketball team tipped off the start of their season on the road against the Craig Panthers. Similar to 2024, the Vikings first games on the road were against the Craig Panthers. But unlike last year when Craig handily beat the Vikings in back-to-back games, this time the results were opposite. The Vikings won game one 63-22, with seven different players scoring five points or more – showing the kind of depth this year's squad has. The Vikings scored 37 points i...

A theme for the Petersburg High School Wrestling team has been growth, continuing to get better every week. Coming off of what their coach called their best meet of the season, the team had a lot of momentum heading into the Region V Championships. The hard work paid off at regionals as three Vikings qualified to the state tournament: sophomore Edgar Olsen (171), junior Eli Anderson (180) and junior Tanner Caulum (145). In a highly anticipated rematch, Caulum and Wrangell's Jackson Carney met...

The Petersburg High School Cheer squad heads into the 2025-26 season with a mix of new and returning cheerleaders after graduating several seniors a year ago. "The group seems very excited and ready to take on and tackle our season," head coach Becky Turland said. One returner from last season is senior and co-captain Kristina Barkfelt, who's excited for what the team can achieve this season. "Because this is my last season, [I'm] hoping we could win regions and make more memories with my teamma...

In their final tournament before regionals, the Petersburg High School Wrestling team had an opportunity to finish the regular season at Wrangell's Tom Sims Invitational on a high with momentum heading into regionals - and they did just that. The team put out their best performance of the season, said head coach James Valentine. Coach Valentine praised the growth they showed in the meet and to get to this point despite having a younger team. "Overall, I thought this was a great weekend for...

Last season, the Petersburg High School Vikings fell just short of a state berth, losing to the Metlakatla Chiefs. Despite the loss, throughout the season, the team was able to improve deploying their motion offense, despite the struggles for the majority of the season. This year, the team hopes to be able to limit mistakes from the get go when running their offense. "For a lot of those guys last year, it was their first varsity experience of having extended minutes – I'm hoping that e...

Heading into the 2025-26 season, the Petersburg High School Girls Varsity Basketball team will be looking to dictate the pace of their opponents and not the other way around. Too many times last season, the Vikings would get off to slow starts, in part because teams just took the fight to them. "Sometimes we would take the floor and it took us a little while to get in the flow of things because other teams would come out and be physical right of the get go and we weren't ready to respond to...

Only a month after the Portland Marathon, 27-year-old marathoner Kayleigh Lenhard embarked on another competition - this time, in the Emerald City. Originally, Lenhard wasn't planning on competing in the Seattle Marathon, but her success in Portland, finishing 84th overall (fifth for women) and a time of 3 hours and 1 minute, earned her a spot for Seattle. "My time for that race was enough to get a free entry in the Seattle Marathon and run with an elite bib and I was like, 'I get to run as an...

With the playoffs quickly approaching, every meet becomes critical for the Petersburg High School Wrestling team to fine tune their techniques and strategies. As stated by head coach James Valentine, this was the team's best tournament performance so far. "After this weekend, we are doing really well. Myself and Tyler Thain, we both have been talking about it a lot. I think this is the best weekend we've seen our kids wrestle all year long," Valentine said. The Bill Weiss Tournament brings the...
Seeking their first state berth since the 2017, the Petersburg High School Varsity Volleyball team controlled their own destiny. The Vikings first game was against the Haines Glacier Bears. The Glacier Bears won the first set 25-15. The Vikings rebounded and won the first set 25-11 with the set now tied 1-1 in a best-of-five. “We came out slow in that first set. We were kind of off trying to get our offense rolling,” head coach Jaime Cabral said. The Vikings won set three 25-18 to take a 2-1 lead. Then the Glacier Bears went 2-0, winning set...

Another year, another brilliant showcase for the Viking Swim Club during November Rain. VSC secured a first place finish. "I don't think these kids would be where they are if those guys [Ginger Evens and Julie Walker) weren't involved in the program and helping out," head coach Derek Gibb said. "I definitely would like to thank coach Evens and Walker for all of the help and coaching that they've done." One of the main goals heading into this meet for VSC was to have as many participants as...

Nothing is guaranteed in sports. You can be the favorite as a team or player to win a championship and still fall short in the biggest moments. Heading into the 2025 ASAA Swim and Dive State Championships, Petersburg senior Logan Tow was the #1 seed in the boys 100 freestyle, with a time of 47.69. To this point, Tow had won five regional titles, set multiple personal best/records throughout his career. The only thing he hadn't accomplished was a state title that seemed almost evasive – a...

At this time last year, the Petersburg High School Wrestling team had competed in four tournaments, allowing them to get plenty of experience and live reps. This year, they just recently wrapped up only their second meet. "I felt as though confidence was not where it needed to be. It took until into the second and third period ... to gain confidence when they should've maybe gained confidence earlier," head coach James Valentine said. Through that, that's where I saw the mistakes coming." The mo...
