Second Street closed for water main, sewer work
The Water and Sewer Reconstruction Project will replace old water and sewer mains on Second Street, as well as several cross-roads.
Second Street and cross roads are closed to through traffic due to a large-scale project. According to Public Works Director Karl Hagerman, the Water and Sewer Reconstruction Project will replace old water and sewer mains on Second Street, as well as Noseeum Street, Gauffin Street and Odin Street.
The contract, for $1,050,000, was secured through loans from Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC). The ADEC Division of Water secures grants and loans for municipal water and sewer projects.
The contractor is S&S General Contractors, of Sitka. The engineering firm is R&M Engineering, of Juneau.
Most of the work on Noseeum has been completed and the sewer portion of Second Street is mostly complete, Hagerman said.
The water mains on Second Street are being worked on this week and next. Work crews will be moving on to work on Gauffin and Odin after Second Street has been completed. Projected completion date is June 30.
“One item of note on this project is that even though the contractor and engineer are both based outside of Petersburg, all except one of the operators, laborers, pipe layers, truck drivers and the inspector are local to Petersburg. This is a rare thing to have happen on a capital project, but it is great to see and good for the community,” Hagerman said.
