Pilot earns six Press Club awards for 2011 work

Pilot staff members Orin Pierson, Ron Loesch and Keith Chaplain earned six awards at last weekend's Alaska Press Club conference in Anchorage. The awards were for work done in 2011 and were entered in the small newspaper category.
Pierson took second and third place for page one layouts published on May 5 and 12 and second for best picture story entitled Jewels and Cowboys published on May 12.
Loesch received first place honors for best scenic photo for “Layers of Solitude” published on July 28 and second place in the same category for “Bubblenet Feeders” published on Sept. 22.
Former reporter Keith Chaplin took third in the category Best Reporting on Crime or Courts, for his story “Three Sitka men plead guilty to illegally killing moose in fall of 2010.” The story was published in the March 31 edition of the paper.
Public Radio reporters from Petersburg’s KFSK also brought home six awards.
Matt Lichtenstein took three awards for radio coverage that brought two third place awards and one first place. Stephanie Joyce earned a third and first place award for her reports and Joe Viechnicki brought home a third place award for his work.
