Peter Kowalski was the State Champion in the 100 Fly at the Junior Olympics in Anchorage. He also ranked first in the 100 Free, the 50 Breast, and the 100 Breast.

Viking Swim Club (VSC) ended its season ended last weekend at the Junior Olympics meet in Anchorage. Swim clubs from across Alaska send their top swimmers to compete in this championship.

Peter Kowalski, Rylan Wallace, Abel Aulbach and Shania Dahlberg represented Petersburg at the meet. The club finished 13th out of 24 teams who scored points, impressive for only having four competitors.

“The fun about this weekend was they were all top performers. We had four kids go and it seemed like every day there was a new highlight,” said VSC coach Andy Carlisle. “Everybody got to be the hero.”

“Peter won almost every time he hit the water,” said Carlisle.

The ten year old Kowalski came home the state champion in the 100 Free, the 50 Breast, the 100 Breast, and the 100 Fly. He was also the runner up in the 200 Free and the 500 Free.

VSC’s other ten year old at the meet, Rylan Wallace, took first in the 50 Fly, and was the runner up in the 50 Breast and 100 Breast.

Abel Aulbach was the champion in the 50 Fly and was the runner up in a hard fought 100 Free race.

Shania Dahlberg set a new club record with her time in the 200 Breast at 2:38:29, earning 5th place at the event.

“It was a pretty fun time,” said Carlisle.

Bringing home six state championships and a broken record is a fantastic way to end the season for the club, which at its peak this year had 65 young Petersburg swimmers participating.

The club takes a break over the summer and starts up again in September.
