City awards $3.9 million library construction contract
The City Council on Monday awarded ASRC McGraw Constructors the construction bid for the new library.
The Library Building Committee recommended low bidder ASRC McGraw Constructors for the project.
ASRC McGraw was one of five bids that came well under the $4.5 million estimated cost. The bid will also allow for additional features such at higher quality finishes to the building, a paved parking lot as well as sidewalks and gutters.
The single story, 9,770 square-foot building was designed by MRV Architects in Juneau. The City Council unanimously approved a bid amount not to exceed $3,900,600.
Councilman Don Koenigs asked what has been spent to date on the new library project.
“It would be nice for the public to know the success of this project … as a Capital Project, it's nice to keep track of all of that,” Koenigs said.
The council also approved an amendment to the 2008 services contract with MRV Architects to include construction phase and engineering services for an amount not to exceed $184,000.
The council on Monday also awarded two harbor project bids, and accepted a grant.
PND Engineers recommended the bid for a new port dock dolphin go to Tamico Inc. The $148,000 project will begin this fall.
“It is an addition at the end of the Petro dock. We did a bunch of new construction out there, and this is to protect that from all the big boats that come along and slam against the face of the dock,” Harbormaster Glorianne Wollen told the council.
“Sounds like we need it,” said Mayor Al Dwyer.
PND Engineers also recommended Global Diving and Salvage for the South Harbor Anodes project. That bid was for $141,000 to install 5-foot tall, anti-corrosion, zinc bars to protect the pilings.
The Council also voted to accept a $172,000 grant with the Alaska Department of Transportation and Facilities to pay for the South Harbor Anodes project.
The council accepted the recommendation of architect Jensen Yorba Lott, and awarded low bidder Silverbow Construction the Mountain View Manor roof replacement project. This bid is for an amount of $269,000.
Mayor Al Dwyer issued a proclamation recognizing the 75th anniversary of the Hospital Guild. A Silver Tea sponsored by the Hospital Guild for the community will be held on May 17.
The Fire Department will host a grand opening from noon to 2 p.m. on May 19 at Fire Station One.
And Angela Menish presented the Southeast Region Emergency Medical Services award to Sandy Dixson for SREMS Provider of the Year.
