Little Norway Festival winners
Crowds lined the street for Friday afternoon’s Little Norway Festival parade
Even organizers are calling the 2012 Little Norway Festival a success.
The Scandinavian Style Show and Luncheon, the Annual Festival Parade, the Mitkof Mummers Musical Melodrama, “Wash Your Troubles Away Or…Dirty Deeds Come Clean,” the Little Norway Festival Pageant, art openings and other events were all well attended. Several attendees even walked away from contests and raffles with cash and prizes from some of the events.
The first-place winners of the Little Norway Boat Regatta held on Saturday were Michael Truex in Heat 1 - Kayaks and Canoes: Andy Cowan in Heat 2 - Wooden Rowboats: Doug Leen and Rory Darling in Heat 3 - Norwegian Faerings. The event was sponsored by the South Kupreanof Yacht Club.
The Mitkof Mummer’s renewed a Little Norway tradition by returning to the stage after a five year absence. Longtime Mummer Irene Littleton took up the mantle of director and led the cast during several months of preparation for three crowd pleasing performances during Mayfest.
The Clausen Memorial Museum saw more than 300 visitors over the weekend. Director Sue McCallum announced the winners of the Little Norway Art Show. The Visitor's Choice award went to Don Cornelius for his painting “Come on, Dad,” second place was awarded to Eric Larson for the statue "Everything Starts with a Dream." It will be installed in Buschmann Park downtown next year. Don Cornelius garnered third place for the painting “Courting.”
Art show honorable mentions went to Susan Christensen for the fabric art piece “Midnight Flight,” Berthiel Evens for “Leaves” a hand painted and dyed, beaded pillow, two of Marj Oines wood pieces, Julia Buschmann for a graphite drawing “Nature Always Conquers,” Joe Randolph for a marker and ink drawing “The Screaming Man,” and David Galaktionoff for the pastel “Cut Throat.”
The Rotary Seafood Bake held at Sandy Beach on Sunday featured salmon, black cod and rockfish straight off the grill. Winners of the $2 drawing included Helen Olsen, who won Alaska Airlines Tickets, Jeff Smith who won a Kindle Fire, Dawn Ingle who won $500 and Lourdes Skeek, who won a Rosemalled Tray. In the $100 raffle, Anne Hurt took home $1,500.
At the Little Norway Festival Pageant, Dave and Nancy Berg were the 2012 Norwegian American Award winners and were presented a rosemalled trunk for their years of service and community involvement.
