Spooked moose endures long swim

Kupreanof resident Doug Leen first observed this moose swimming across the Narrows from Petersburg to Kupreanof last Thursday morning. “It reached the shoreline on my property (old Merriam place) and walked about a bit but was spooked back into the water. She attempted to swim back, but by now she was pretty exhausted and was carried by the ebbing current in the center of the Narrows towards town,” according to Leen. By then a tug/barge combo rounded Buoy 58 less than 1/4 mile away. Russ Thynes called the harbormaster and I called AML, explained Leen. The tug was notified at the 11th hour and slowed down enough to allow the moose again to swim back to Kupreanof avoiding the barge.
