Donald H. Luhr, 79, took his last boat ride on June 5, 2012 after a year long battle with Mesothelioma. Don was born in Tacoma, Wash. to Frank and Laura (Bollen) Luhr on April 6, 1933. His family moved to Petersburg in March of 1945 and he fished with his parents until his senior year and then on his own boat. Don married Beulah Reid on May 31, 1952 and they celebrated their 60 years of marriage on June 2 with family and friends at the Elks Lodge.
For over 25 years Don worked as a mechanic /operator for the City of Petersburg, J & H Logging, Alaska Barite Co., Ellis Machine Shop and Piston & Rudder. In 1978 Don purchased the F/V Mrs. Mac and dragged the love of his life into his second love - salmon trolling. He built the F/V Carefree in the early 1980s and continued to fish the waters of southeast Alaska for the next 30 years. Don was known as the “fleet mechanic” to the Petersburg trollers who fished in the Sitka area for many years.
Mr. Luhr was a life member of Petersburg Elks Lodge 1615 and served as Exalted Ruler 1977-1978 and continued to serve the lodge as a Lifetime trustee in charge of maintenance. He was a member of Pioneers of Alaska, Igloo 164 and belonged to Seafood Producers Cooperative.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Frank N. Luhr.
Don is survived by his wife Beulah and four children; Donna (Alyn) Dunaway of Wasilla, Bob Luhr, Mike (Barb) Luhr, Joyce (Rob) Cummings all of Petersburg. Grandchildren; Greg & Sandra Dunaway, Jason (Stacy) Luhr, Shawn (Kristina) Luhr, Kyle Skinner, Trystin & Leighnei Luhr, Justin (Kayln) Luhr, Bradee Luhr, John (Jessica) Richmond, Sabrina Richmond, Skyler, Jessica & Chad Cummings. His five great grandchildren are Aiden & Kesia Luhr, Johnny V & Kasen Richmond and Hailey Luhr; Aunt Elma (Bollen) Wyse of Puyallup and cousin Scott (Kathy) Ruff of Renton.
The family will have a graveside service at a later date. Donations may be made in Don’s honor to the Petersburg Elks Building/Furnace Fund, the Elk Scholarship fund or a charity of their choice.
