Multi-year utility rate hikes proposed

Ordinances 963, 964 and 965 were amended during the Petersburg City Council meeting Monday night.

The City of Petersburg Ordinance #963 has the purpose of adjusting the rates for providing safe potable water to residents and businesses.

“The water rate for the City will see two percent increases per year through the year 2018,” Petersburg Public Works Assistant Director Chris Cotta said.

The main concern for this amendment for the council was determining if, in the near future, the rate increase wasn't enough. “I believe it would be important to have a yearly review of this ordinance,” Petersburg Mayor Al Dwyer said. “If there is a problem with it, we can change it at that time.”

Cotta stated that it is customary to review all public works ordinances yearly.

The results of this rate increase will be from a monthly service fee of $31.35 for a 5/8 inch service size at $2.04 per 1000 gallons to $35.31 at $2.30 per 1000 gallons in 2018.

There are different rates for the service size from 5/8 inch to six inches. The six inch service fee is presently $1104.65 at $.92 per 1000 gallons and will rise to $1244.02 at $1.04 per 1000 gallons for 2018.

City Ordinance #964 refers to the collection and disposal of refuse for the city. This amendment will direct a two percent yearly increase for this service. At this time the rate for 32 gallons and one pick up per week is $27.09. With the rate increases the service fee will change to $30.51 in 2018.

City Ordinance #965 refers to sewer charges for the city which will be amended to increase 4.5 percent yearly through 2018. Presently, the monthly residential rate stands at $31.02. By the year 2018 the monthly rate will increase to $40.40.

Each of these ordinance amendments were approved by a four to one vote with council member Don Koenigs voting against.
