The possible results of the new Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) program were discussed by the Petersburg City School Board.
“This is not a canned program,” Erica Kludt-Painter said. “We as a district and community will create this program to fit our needs.”
PBIS is a process for creating school environments that are more predictable and effective for achieving academic and social goals. For some schools, PBIS will enhance their current systems and practices, for others it will radically change the culture for the better.
“We will work together to come up with basic expectations that are consistent across all grade levels with modifications for age,” Kludt-Painter said. “Recognizing a student when they are doing good is another major factor with this program.”
A key strategy of the PBIS process is prevention. The majority of students follow the school’s expectations, but are never acknowledged for their positive behavior. Through instruction, comprehension and regular practice, all stakeholders use a consistent set of behavior expectations and rules. When some students do not respond to teaching of the behavioral rules, PBIS schools view it as an opportunity for re-teaching, not just punishment.
“We will also be implementing the School Wide Information System (SWIS),” Kludt-Painter said. “This allows us to break down problems in order to better catch them early.”
SWIS is a web-based information system used to improve the behavior support in elementary, middle and high schools. The purpose of SWIS is to provide school personnel with accurate, timely, and practical information for making decisions about discipline systems. School personnel collect on-going information about discipline events in their school, and enter this information through protected, web-based software. SWIS provides summaries of this information for use in the design of effective behavior support for individual students, groups of students, or the whole student body. With accurate and timely information, school personnel can make decisions that transform schools into safe, orderly, and supportive environments.
