Viking swimmers have great showing in Ketchikan

Viking men and women swimmers traveled to Ketchikan for the first meet of the season Friday and Saturday, Aug. 24 and 25. These competitors came home with several top and second place wins for the two day meet.

Overall the girls placed third Friday and Saturday while the boys placed third Friday and fourth Saturday.

“The kids did really well for our first meet,” Head Coach Andy Carlisle said. “But we still have a lot of work to do.”

Friday for the men, Abel Aulbach finished third in the 200-yard freestyle event. Vince Kowalski won the 50-yard freestyle, Kowalski also won the 100-yard breaststroke with Aulbach coming in second.

On Saturday Kowalski finished second in the 200-yard freestyle event. Aulbach placed second in the 50-yard freestyle and won the 100-yard freestyle. Calvin Walsh finished second in the 500-yard freestyle and Kowalski placed third in the 100-yard backstroke.

“We only had six competitors for this meet,” Carlisle said. “We would normally have 12 to 15 kids racing.”

Carlisle explained that each member of the team has to have participated in 10 practices to be eligible for competition and some of the team just returned from fishing or vacation and did not have the practice time needed.

“We will have everybody ready next week for the meet here on Sept. 7 and 8,” Carlisle said.

On the women's side of the pond for Friday, Shalie Dahl finished fifth in the 200-yard individual medley and Shania Dahlberg placed sixth. Eva Kowalski finished second in the 50-yard freestyle event and Abi Taylor taking third. Dahl finished second in the 100-yard butterfly and Kowalski placed second in the 500-yard freestyle. Dahlberg finished fourth in the 100-yard backstroke and Taylor came in fifth.

Saturday Kowalski finished third in the 200-yard freestyle event. Dahl finished third in the 50-yard freestyle and third in the 100-yard freestyle with Taylor coming in fifth. Dahlberg finished second in the 500-yard freestyle and the Petersburg team finished second in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Kowalski finished fourth in the 100-yard backstroke and Dahlberg placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke.

“A lot of these kids were close to their best times and that is great for the first meet,” Carlisle said. “I think we are going to have a great season.”
