Petersburg swims their way to the top

Shalie Dahl earned first place in the 100 yard butterfly and in the 200 yard individual medley.

Petersburg played host to Sitka, Thunder Mountain and Craig over the weekend for the Viking's first home competition.

The Viking Swim Team began Friday with the women's 200 yard medley relay and the Petersburg girls finished first with the team of Grace Weller, Shania Dahlberg, Shalie Dahl and Eva Kowalski. The boys finished second in their 200 yard medley relay with Skipper Erickson, Thane O'Brien, Kenny Fox and Jimmie Busch.

The women's 200 yard freestyle found Dahlberg in first place with a time of 2:08:32 and E. Kowalski and Abi Taylor bringing in the fourth and fifth spots.

The boys found themselves in great position for the 200 yard freestyle with Abel Aulbach bringing in third place; V. Kowalski and Erickson coming in fifth and sixth; Ben Zarlengo finished ninth and Ian Fleming, Aden Martinsen and Nels Evens brought in 11th, 12th and 13th places.

Shalie Dahl finished first in the 200 yard individual medley with a time of 2:26:86 and Evan Marsh brought in first for the men's 200 yard individual medley.

The women's 50 yard freestyle found Weller in second place and Hannah Pfundt in sixth. Dahl found first place in the 100 yard butterfly and Zarlengo and Evens came in fifth and eighth for that event.

Taylor brought in third for the women's 100 yard freestyle while Aulbach and Martinsen finished first and sixth for the men.

E. Kowalski had a final time of 5:56:15 for her first place win in the 500 yard freestyle event; V. Kowalski finished first for the men with a final time of 5:14:80 and Erickson and Fleming brought in fourth and fifth places.

The team of Dahlberg, Dahl, Weller and Taylor finished first in the 200 yard freestyle relay with the boys, Evens, Martinsen, Zarlengo and Erickson coming in second in the event.

Weller found third place in the 100 yard backstroke with Marsh finishing second in the same event for the men.

Dahlberg and Pfundt finished first and fourth in the 100 yard breaststroke.

The Viking boys Aulbach, V. Kowalski, Marsh and Fleming finished first in the 400 yard freestyle relay.

The combined team scores for Friday's competition found Petersburg in second place behind Sitka with the girls placing first and the boys coming in second.

Saturday competition began with Erickson, Martinsen, Zarlengo and Evens bringing in second place for the 200 yard medley relay.

Dahl and Marsh both finished first in the 200 yard freestyle and Dahlberg, E. Kowalski and Pfundt brought in second, third and fourth for the girls 200 yard individual medley.

The boys 200 yard individual medley found Erickson in fourth place, Zarlengo in seventh and Martinsen, Fleming and Evens bringing in ninth, 10th and 11th positions.

In the 50 yard freestyle, Taylor finished fourth for the girls and Aulbach bringing in first and V. Kowalski finishing third for the boys.

The 100 yard butterfly found Dahl at the top of the pack and the boys 100 yard freestyle had Marsh finishing first and Fleming coming in eighth.

Dahlberg finished the 500 yard freestyle in first place with a final time of 5:59:42. Aulbach finished first in the 500 yard freestyle with a final time of 5:20:27 and Evens and Martinsen finished fifth and sixth for the boys in that event.

The team of E. Kowalski, Dahl, Dahlberg and Taylor finished first in the 200 yard freestyle relay and Aulbach, Marsh, V. Kowalski and Fleming finished first for the boys.

Abel Aulbach was one of the Vikings top performers over the weekend.

For the 100 yard breaststroke E. Kowalski and Taylor finished second and fifth for the girls and Erickson and Zarlengo brought in fourth and fifth for the boys.

Pfundt finished sixth in the 100 yard breaststroke and V. Kowalski finished fourth.

The team of E. Kowalski, Dahl, Dahlberg and Taylor brought in first place in the 400 yard freestyle relay and Marsh, Aulbach, V. Kowalski and Fleming finished second in the event for the boys. Zarlengo, Evens, Martinsen and Erickson also competed in the 400 yard freestyle relay to finish fifth.

Combined scores found Petersburg in third place for Saturday's competition with the girls and boys both placing second.

“I was so impressed with how these kids raced after a tough week of practice,” Head Coach Andy Carlisle said. “We had several great races with a lot of best times.”
