Petersburg team takes 12th in Klondike Road Relay

The Petersburg Smashanuskas finished 12th overall and eighth in their category in a field of 123 teams in the Klondike Road Relay last week. The runners completed this 10-leg, 109 mile overnight race in 15 hours, eight minutes and 52 seconds.

“The teams had different start times,” runner Erin Watkins said. “The slower teams started around 7 p.m. and the faster ones started later around 9:30p.m.”

Runner Emil Tucker ran the first leg of the race in one hour, 22 minutes and 10 seconds at a pace of 9:20 per mile; Dana Christensen took the second leg at one hour and 10 seconds at a pace of 10:45 per mile; Amyee Peeler finished the third leg in one hour one minute and 51 seconds for a pace of 7:56 per mile; Erin Watkins completed the fourth leg beginning at 1:30 a.m. in one hour, 50 minutes and 25 seconds on a pace of 8:26 per mile; Joe Viechnicki ran the fifth leg in one hour, 38 minutes and 40 seconds at an astonishing 8.5 miles per hour along with his brother John, coming in on a pace of 7:02 per mile for the sixth leg; Monica Gross finished leg six in one hour, 19 minutes and 35 seconds on a pace of 9:03 per mile; Maria Wimmer took the seventh leg at one hour, 49 minutes and 19 seconds at 6.8 miles per hour; Tess Abbott completed leg nine of this race at one hour, 38 minutes and 27 seconds on a pace of 8:52 per mile and Carin Christensen brought the team home in the 10th leg at 7.5 miles per hour in one hour, 36 minutes and 47 seconds.

“We started with five teams,” Watkins said. “And we did notice that we started to catch up to people and pass them but none of us expected to come out like this.”
