Lloyd Edward Lapeyri, 73, former owner of Mitkof Lumber Company in Petersburg died Sept. 3 of complications from a vehicle accident. Lapeyri, at the time of his death was the owner of Captain’s Choice Motel and Chilkoot Fish and Caviar in Haines, according to a report in the Chilkat Valley News.
The former sawmill operator had recently undergone surgery for heart bypass and valve replacement, according to former employee and friend Larry Beck.
In 1976, Lapeyri accepted the position of general manager at Mitkof Lumber Company in Petersburg. He was promoted to president of the company three years later and eventually became an owner with partner Pat Ford. Lapeyri and his wife Sharon operated the former Hobby Shop in Petersburg as well.
The company moved to Haines in 1987 after purchasing the former Schnabel Lumber Co. mill from the state of Alaska. The mill closed in May 1991.
Lapeyri took over the Captain’s Choice in 1994 and operated Chilkoot Fish and Caviar as a processing plant at the former sawmill site from 2004 to 2009.
Lapeyri is survived by siblings residing around the Yreka, Calif. area including brother Bob Rowe and sister Jodeane Lapeyri, Sandy Lamar and Jackie Sellon; by sons Jon Lapeyri of Haines and Brian Lapeyri of Petersburg; and by daughter Lori Smith of Alabama and Tamara Cook of Pennsylvania.
