Petersburg swimmers place second in home meet

Petersburg Viking swimmers hosted Sitka, Thunder Mountain and Metlakatla over the weekend.
“I was impressed with how the kids raced tough after a really hard week of practice,” Head Coach Andy Carlisle said. “We had several great races with a lot of best times.”
Friday evening began with the Viking girls finishing first in the women’s 200-yard medley relay with the team of Grace Weller, Shania Dahlberg, Shalie Dahl and Eva Kowalski.
Dahlberg took first in the 200-yard freestyle with Kowalski and Abby Taylor finishing fourth and fifth.
Dahl picked up first place in the 200-yard individual medley and Weller brought in second in the 50-yard freestyle. Dahl also finished first in the 100-yard butterfly with Taylor finishing third in the 100-yard freestyle.
Eva Kowalski brought in first for the 500-yard freestyle and the girls finish first in the 200-yard freestyle relay with the team of Dahlberg, Dahl, Weller and Taylor.
Weller finished third in the 100-yard breaststroke with Dahlberg and Hannah Pfundt coming in first and fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke.
Saturday the girls started the day with a win, with Dahl finishing first in the 200-yard freestyle. Taylor brought in fourth for the 50-yard freestyle and Dahl came in first in the 100-yard butterfly.
Dahlberg came in first place in the 500-yard freestyle and the girls brought in another first place in the 200-yard freestyle relay with the team of Eva Kowalski, Dahl, Dahlberg and Taylor.
Eva Kowalski finished tied for second place in the 100-yard backstroke and Pfundt brought in sixth place in the 100-yard breaststroke.
The Viking girls finished first in the 400-yard freestyle relay with the team of Eva Kowalski, Dahl, Dahlberg and Taylor. The girls finished first overall for Friday’s competition and third Saturday
Friday the boys began the night with a second place win in the 200-yard medley relay with the team of Skipper Erickson, Abel Aulbach, Evan Marsh and Vince Kowalski. The boys B team finished fifth in the same race with the team of Ben Zarlengo, Aden Martinsen, Ian Fleming and Nels Evens.
Aulbach finished third in the 200-yard freestyle, with Zarlengo coming in ninth, Fleming in 11th, Martinsen in 12th and Evens finishing in 13th place.
Marsh brought in first place for the 200-yard individual medley and Zarlengo and Evens competed in the 100-yard butterfly finishing fifth and eighth.
Aulbach brought in first in the 100-yard freestyle with Martinsen finishing sixth. Vince Kowalski finished first in the 500-yard freestyle with Erickson and Fleming bringing in fourth and fifth place in the same race.
The boys brought in second place in the 200-yard freestyle relay with the team of Evens, Martinsen, Zarlengo and Erickson and Marsh finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke.
The team of Aulbach, Vince Kowalski, Marsh and Fleming finished first in the 400 yard freestyle relay for an overall second place win for the Viking boys Friday.
Saturday the boys started off on top with a first place win by Marsh in the 200-yard freestyle. Erickson finished fourth in the 200 yard individual medley with Zarlengo, Martinsen, Fleming and Evens bringing in seventh, ninth, 10th and 11th places for the same race.

Aulbach came in first in the 50-yard freestyle with Vince Kowalski finishing third. Marsh finished second in the 100-yard freestyle with Fleming coming in eighth. Aulbach, Evens and Martinsen competed in the 500 yard freestyle with Aulbach finishing first, Evens fifth and Martinsen coming in sixth.
The team of Aulbach, Marsh, Vince Kowalski and Fleming came in first place in the 200-yard freestyle relay and Erickson and Zarlengo finished fourth and fifth in the 100-yard backstroke.
Vince Kowalski finished fourth in the 100 yard breaststroke and the team of Marsh, Aulbach, Vince Kowalski and Fleming came in second in the 400 yard freestyle relay with an overall win for the boys of second place in Saturday’s competition.
“This was another great meet for the Vikings,” Carlisle said. “We had several lifetime best swims and many great races. The kids are racing tougher than I have ever seen them. In the next couple of weeks we will nail down the events they will compete in at Regionals at the end of the month.”
