June Alice White, 91
June Alice White
June Alice White, 91, passed away at Petersburg’s Long Term Care Center on November 14, 2012.
A true Alaskan pioneer, June was born in Petersburg on June 11, 1921 to parents Carl and Elizabeth Roger. As a toddler, she owned the first share of stock issued in the Northern Fox & Fur Farm. She spent her girlhood at the log house her father built overlooking Wrangell Narrows and Frederick Sound and in Port Alexander where her parents managed a restaurant in the summertime.
She married commercial fisherman Howard White in 1940 and the couple raised four children. An accomplished seamstress and dress designer, June sewed alterations for several of the town’s clothing merchants while raising her children.
In 1962, the family moved to Squaw Harbor in the Aleutian Islands where Howard helped pioneer the king crab fishing industry. The family returned to Petersburg in 1965. Howard and June retired to Anchorage in 1971 where June worked at a lady’s apparel store, a bookstore and the airport gift shop. June returned to Petersburg in 1991 to be near her husband who then resided at the Petersburg Medical Center.
She loved to dance and to wear stylish clothes. Yellow was her favorite color. June was proud of her children’s successes despite their widely diverse career choices.
She was active in Women of the Moose, the Emblem Club and Eastern Star.
June was preceded in death by her husband Howard White and son Lester White.
She is survived by her sister Betty Pederson of Petersburg; and her children, Shirley Stephenson and her husband Randy of Palm Desert, Calif; Hoopie Davidson and her husband William of Petersburg; William White and his wife Donna of Volcano, Hawaii; grandchildren Robert Davidson and his wife Jean of Petersburg and Christy Jackson of Thornton, Colo; great-grandchildren Eowyn and Seamus Davidson of Petersburg and Caylee and Caden Jackson of Thornton, Colo.
A memorial celebration of June’s life will be announced in the spring.
