Terry Joe Smith, 57
Terry Joe Smith died November 11, 2012 while enduring cancer treatment.
Born to Howard and Esther Joan Smith on April 17, 1955, Terry was born and grew up in Lafayette, Ind. where he enjoyed working with his grandfather on the farm. In his 20s he moved to Arizona, where he met his wife Sharon. There Terry and Sharon had many adventures, from hiking, camping, horseback riding to hunting. Terry worked construction and started S-bar-S home builders with his father.
After having two children, Terry and Sharon decided to move to Alaska. With his skilled hands and creativity, Terry turned an old school bus into a motor home and they headed north.
In Petersburg, Terry crewed on commercial fishing boats for several years before starting his own construction company, Smith Builders. He built homes with the simple philosophy of honesty, fairness and quality. He treasured the joy of being the one to build a family their home.
Like construction Terry enjoyed the hard work and challenges of commercial fishing. Terry long lined for halibut and gill netted for salmon all over Southeast Alaska. Terry remained a carpenter and fisherman in Petersburg for the last 25 years.
Terry will be missed by all of us. We all loved his popular saying, “Iʼve got an idea” or “Iʼve been thinking.” This active imagination is what helped him to be successful in life and family.
Terry was known as a family man, home builder and fisherman. He was hard working, honest and loved his family dearly.
He was preceded in death by his brother James.
Terry is survived by Sharon his wife of 30yrs; children, April (Jeremy) Goshern of Tennessee, Jennifer (Matt) Gordley of Alaska, James (Chelsea) Smith of Alaska; father Howard Smith; mother Joann Darling; sisters Connie, Brenda, Darlene and Rose; grandchildren, Raylee 17, Rylan 9, Aaralyn 6, Madden 1-1/2 yrs and Connor 1-1/2yrs.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Terry’s honor Thursday, November 29, at 5:30 PM at the Sons of Norway Hall, with a potluck and sharing time to follow.
