Viking girls battle Lady Braves
Vikings girls basketball started out the competition season with a weekend on the road against a perennial powerhouse, the Lady Braves of Mt. Edgecumbe.
The Petersburg girls have a lot of fresh faces with eight out of the 13 girls traveling to Sitka being freshmen. The Lady Braves, on the other hand, are an experienced team with many girls coming back who played a lot of minutes last year, according to Vikings girls coach Dino Brock.
But what this years Vikings squad lacks in experience they make up for with energy and effort.
“We went in excited about the team and the way we’ve been practicing, and we came out, in both the JV and varsity games on Friday, and played just about as hard as we could,” said Dino Brock. “We were diving after loose balls and going after everything. We just battled them all night long.”
Friday night the Petersburg varsity girls came up up short losing 34-49 to Edgecumbe.
Saturday night the girls were back at it with even more intensity.
“We came out and battled and battled against a team that was a lot bigger than us,” said Brock.
The Vikings girls closed the first quarter on Saturday tied and went into the half with a two point lead. Experience got the better of them though as the Lady Braves pulled away in the second half and won the game by ten, 39-49.
Kylie Wallace was the Vikings leading scorer, but Coach Brock was glad to report that scoring was nicely distributed throughout the team.
“I was very happy with both nights’ effort, the way we played, the way we took care of the basketball,” said Brock. “Obviously, two week into the season there are things we need to work on, but the kids are working hard and doing a great job.”
The Vikings are looking forward to the tournament at home this weekend.
“It’s a great opportunity for us to continue to get better. There are some great teams coming in so we’ll get to see a lot of different styles.
The Vikings girls take on the Lady Glacier Bears of Haines at 6:00 pm on Thursday in the Petersburg High School gym.
