TRT funds available for qualified non-profit organizations

The Petersburg Transient Room Tax Committee announced the availability of $8,136 from the TRT receipts to be awarded to qualified non-profit organizations. Applications for the grants can be picked up at the Petersburg finance office, or on the Borough website, explained Petersburg Borough Manager Steve Giesbrecht in his report during the Petersburg Borough Assembly regular meeting Monday afternoon.

Also explained in his report was news that Petersburg EMS Director Sandy Dixson has been following up on a report that the University of Alaska may be able to conduct an inundation study at no charge.

“The downside to that is that is may take them a very long time to do this study,” Giesbrecht said. “We are trying to get as much information as possible to see if this is the direction we want to go because it would save a lot of money.”

Tara Alcock of the Petersburg Public Library is working to develop bid packages for the furnishings and equipment for the new library. The Teen Advisory Group will also be weighing in with their comments on the furnishings for the teen area.

“We will be using a co-op that we are a member of that pre-bids all of these things,” Giesbrecht said. “This should move fairly quickly when the time comes and they have already arranged discounts.”

Giesbrecht also spoke up regarding a local resident who was concerned about the street walking traffic at Haugen Drive and Second Street.

“The Public Safety Advisory Board and the Library Board may ask the assembly to provide a letter of support to making the appropriate changes to improve this safety issue,” Giesbrecht stated. “Comments are being gathered to make sure all walking traffic is safe.”

A booklet regarding the Petersburg Police Department and jail facility will be made in order to address concerns about the existing building.

“This booklet can be used to help get support in Juneau,” Giesbrecht explained. “This is just a small package solely focused on the proposed project.”
