Lady Vikings win one, lose one at home
Grace Weller gets past her defender as Adanna Kvernvik sets the pick.
The Petersburg Lady Vikings played host to Mt. Edgecumbe for the weekend and ended up winning one game and losing the other, but not by much.
“We had a really good weekend,” Head Coach Dino Brock said. “I especially think that Friday night was a really good game. We struggled in the first half and were down seven to 13 at the end of the first half but kept ourselves in the game because of our defense.”
Brock explained that the team has been talking about that a lot and they did during halftime Friday.
“That is something that is very, very important,” Brock stated. “That is what gives us a chance.”
The Lady Vikings came back out and put up 13 points in the third quarter and 20 in the fourth.
“We gave ourselves a chance in that first half,” Brock said. “They did a great job and I am happy with their performance.”
Saturday found the Lady Vikings a little bit slower.
“The other team came out hotter and we didn't begin as well as they did,” Brock stated. “The game just seemed to go on that way and we struggled as we put up three points in the third quarter and they put up 16.”
It ended as a 21 point game but Brock is happy with the way his team played.
Kylie Wallace knocks down a jumper, for two of her 18 points on Friday night.
“I think they did well,” Brock said. “I also think a lot of the team grew up over this weekend and we look forward to improving more.”
The Petersburg girls pulled out a win Friday night with a score of 40 to 35 and were led by Kylie Wallace who put up 18 points; Kyla Willis scored eight points; Grace Weller and Ruby Brock brought in six points each and Xerinia Hilburn put up two points.
The Lady Vikings lost Saturday with a score of 56 to 35 and were led in scoring by Wallace with 10 points, Willis with eight, Weller with six and Sierra Streuli brought in three points.
“It was a good weekend all the way around,” Brock stated. “But now we go on to Valdez and will face the number one team in the State.”
The Lady Vikings will travel to Valdez over the weekend for the Valdez Elks Invite.
