Vikings drop two to Mt. Edgecumbe

The Petersburg Viking traveled to Mt. Edgecumbe over the weekend and dropped two games but showed great competitive spirit and improvement.

“We have been talking about making sure we make the most of every possession,” Head Coach Rick Brock said. “I really felt that, more than any series throughout the year, we really stepped on the floor with confidence and played hard.”

Brock explained that the boys began the game Friday with an early lead and were up eight to 12 at the end of the first quarter.

“We got into foul trouble but were still up 28 to 21 at half-time,” Brock stated. “There was a gap in the third quarter of a couple of minutes where they got loose on us and scored a bunch of points in transition.”

The Vikings were down 55 to 32 at the end of the third quarter and then had a solid fourth quarter.

“I know it was a 25 point game,” Brock said. “But sometimes the score doesn't actually reflect what is going on out on the court.”

Brock stated that the game was truly decided in the last couple of minutes of the game.

Saturday the Vikings had a really good beginning to the game.

“There was a point when we were up seven to nothing,” Brock said. “Then we had two key players get into foul trouble and had to sit out the remainder of the half.”

Mt. Edgecumbe grabbed a one point lead at the end of the first quarter and the same continued from Friday and the Vikings got into foul trouble and Mt. Edgecumbe made a run and that was the difference in the quarter.

“We had a great third quarter,” Brock stated. “We cut the lead down to 41 to 48 and really from that point they went on a couple of other runs but were never able to get closer than nine.”

Brock explained that he was happy with the effort level and feels a lot of good things came out of the weekend.

“We have definitely improved since the last time we played them,” Brock stated. “We got some good minutes from Kjell Wittstock, Jared Volk, Clayton Franklin and Alan Jensen who were able to come into the game for the players that had to sit. Every one of those boys stepped up and did a great job for the team.”

The Vikings lost Friday night with a score of 46 to 71 and were led in points by Kayin McKay with 14 points followed by Conner Yeager and Colby Bell with eight points each and Michael Brock with seven. Saturday's game ended with a score of 68 to 55 with Brock leading the team in scoring with 17 points and Bell bringing in 12.

The Vikings will travel to Valdez for the Valdez Elks Invite this weekend.
