The Petersburg Vikings hosted the Wrangell Wolves for Homecoming 2013 and came away big winners for the weekend.

“This was a great weekend for us,” Head Coach Rick Brock said. “We ended up winning both games and our play has improved from the beginning of the season.”

According to Brock the Vikings started out slow Friday evening but were ahead by two at the end of the first quarter, by three at halftime and only one point ahead at the end of the third quarter.

The Vikings won with a score of 57 to 43 Friday.

“It was a close game,” Brock stated. “It was back and forth for most of the game until the last four minutes and we had a couple of key defensive stops.”

Brock also explained that it was a hard fought game and the Vikings were in foul trouble early and his bench responded well to the pressure.

“As a team we passed the ball well,” Brock said. “Our decision making on the court was improved due to the games we played in Valdez.”

Friday's game was led in points by Michael Brock who scored 22 with six three-point shots, followed by Tristan Welton with 13.

Saturday's game found the Vikings starting out faster and they were up 18 to six at the end of the first quarter and Dan Loucks scored eight of those first quarter points.

“We were passing the ball and then Wrangell changed their defensive patterns and were covering a lot of different people,” Brock stated. “Throughout the game we stepped up our play and we were in the double digits all four quarters and that makes a big difference.”

According to Brock, the team played well together and were very cohesive.

“This was a great series for us,” Brock said. “I am proud of the improvements this team has made over the season.”

The Vikings were led by Welton in points Saturday with 20 and he also went six for six on the free throw line. Brock and Loucks each scored 13 points and Colby Bell brought in 11.

“We have two seniors on the team, Dan Loucks and Clayton Franklin, who played an excellent series,” Brock stated. “Both of these players bring everything they have every day and come to work. I take my hat off to them and I appreciate them as a coach.”

The Vikings will travel to Sitka for the Regional Tournament next week.

“We were better this week than we were last week and we have shown tremendous improvement,” Brock said. “We are hoping to play our very best basketball next week.”
