John Silva Jr.

John Silva, Jr. a resident of Petersburg and Angoon, Alaska, passed away on March 3, 2013 at the University of Washington Hospital in Seattle, Wash. from a short battle with cancer.

John was born in Petersburg to John Silva, Sr. and Maria Perez-Silva on May16, 1949.

John was a very quiet and reserved person who took his job very seriously working as the Water Plant Operator—taking care of the City of Angoon water for 34 years. He was looking forward to retirement, but instead, due to his continued dedication to the Water Plant, he continued to work all the way up until he left for medical care in Seattle. While working for the City of Angoon one year, he received the Operator of the Year Award for all the Water Plant Operations in Southeast.

John attended Petersburg High School and enlisted in the Army and served during the Vietnam War as U.S. Army Private First Class. After serving in the Army, he moved to Juneau to work, where he met his wife Harriet Samato-Silva. They married on Aug. 30, 1972 and both worked in Juneau for two years and then moved to Angoon to reside. Before starting work for the City of Angoon, he worked for Kootznoowoo Inc. as their Oil Delivery Operator. He also worked for Southeast Skyways as the freight delivery person. He commercial fished for many years owning his own boat and fishing permit. He enjoyed going subsistence fishing and putting up smoked sockeye fish during summer months with his wife and sisters-in-laws Loretta and Betty Ann.

John was preceded in death by his parents; John Silva, Sr. and Maria Silva and his sister Tiadola Rosita Silva and his high school friend; Benji Lucas and his friend Duane Fryrear.

John is survived by his three daughters; Rosita (Irl) Fredrickson, Christel Silva, Juanita Silva and only son John Perez Silva; his grandchildren: William Silva and (2) granddaughters—Tiadola Silva and Makia Silva, all of Angoon; his brother Lewie Silva, Sr. of Petersburg and his children Marylene Silva, Maria (Brandon) Wagemaker, Luis Silva, Jr. and Michaela Silva and her baby daughter Rosebelle Silva; his brother Tony Silva of Seattle, Wash.; other family members Marcelo Quinto, Frankie Quinto; Rita (Warren) Shakley; Betty Marvin; Virginia Mata; and his lifelong family/friends Clifford and Flora Tagaban.
