Road construction plans around Little Norway Fest

Road construction continues along Nordic Drive, but the sidewalks have been poured with the exception of the sections that need glass-seeding.

The Petersburg Road Improvement Project continues to progress through Phase 2 as DOWL HKM Project Engineer Matt McGuan, along with SECON Project Superintendent Bryce Iverson explained what has been done with the project and what is to come for the next two weeks with emphasis on scheduling around Mayfest and vandalism to poured concrete.

“At this time both lanes of Nordic Drive from the north end of the project to the Dolphin Street intersection have been poured,” McGuan stated. “The northbound lane is open for traffic and the southbound lane will be used for parking only. The only traffic through that area at this time is northbound.”

Both lanes of Dolphin Street have been paved along with the final section of the parking lane on the north side of the street at the top of the hill.

According to McGuan, demolition and excavation of Excel Street has been completed and curb and gutter work has been started.

Curb and gutter work has been completed on Nordic Drive up to the Excel Street intersection. Sidewalks have been poured on both sides of Nordic Drive with the exception of the glass-seeded sections which are marked with construction cones at this time.

“Over the next two weeks we will be finishing the sidewalks on the Phase 2 section of Nordic Drive which is mainly the glass-seeded sections,” McGuan stated. “Pavement will be poured in the southwest quad of the Dolphin Street intersection followed by, the southbound lane of Nordic Drive.”

The curb and gutter work on Excel Street will be completed in this time frame and a schedule is set for Phase 3.

“Phase 3 of the project will begin after Mayfest and it will include the area between Fram Street and Excel Street,” McGuan stated. “That will start with demolition work in the Fram Street intersection and work back to Excel Street where work is going on now.”

Prior to Mayfest, according to the schedule, all of the pavement, up to Excel Street should be poured, according to McGuan.

“The pavement for Excel Street will not be in place in time for Mayfest,” McGuan said in regard to the work on the side streets. “Sidewalks will be available but the roadway will not be paved.”

There have been incidents of drawing and scratching initials into the concrete with some damaging consequences.

“We expect some initials in the fresh concrete,” Iverson stated. “But there have been some extreme cases and it has cost the crews several hours of time to repair that damage.”

Iverson stated that every time repairs have to be made, that is time that is taken away from the continuation of the project.
