Petersburg Borough resident Mike Stainbrook proposed a resolution to the Petersburg Borough Assembly during its regular meeting Monday afternoon to preserve Petersburg Creek as it is without encroachment, electrical corridor or power lines.

Stainbrook read the resolution to the Assembly: “Whereas Petersburg Creek drainage and estuary is a treasure to this community and deserves special protection now and for the future. Petersburg Creek has been used and loved for generations as a recreation site by young, old, residents and tourists alike. The construction of a power transmission corridor and lines across, through or under Petersburg Creek will permanently affect the habitat and the experience of users and the visual beauty of this area. The Borough of Petersburg recognizes Kake's need for affordable electric power and also recognizes there are alternative routes that would both allow for transmission of power to Kake and for protection of Petersburg Creek. Therefore be it resolved that the Borough of Petersburg believes that Petersburg Creek should be left as it is with no encroachment from an electrical corridor or electrical power lines and that an alternate route can be chosen.”

“Protecting Petersburg Creek is a great place to start with protecting the landmarks within the borough boundaries,” Stainbrook stated. “The sooner we become focused on this issue the better equipped we will be to handle the situation when it arises.”

“I believe we should stay on top of this situation,” Petersburg Borough Assembly member Nancy Strand stated. “We need to be ready when the EIS comes out.”

Resolution 2013-15 was adopted with a unanimous vote to save Petersburg Creek. Work sessions will be scheduled with the City of Kupreanof and Petersburg Borough Assembly member Cindi Lagoudakis has been appointed liaison for this project.
