On January 31, 1939, Richard Dean Carter was born in a farmhouse in Cass County, Mich. to Lazelle and Grace (Kantz) Carter.

Dick graduated from Constantine High School in 1957 where he played football and began a lifelong enthusiasm for high school sports. At that time, he had a '57 Chevy convertible and his passion for cars was underway. While on a Methodist Youth Group hayride he met his wife Rosemary Young of Sturgis, Mich.
