Richard Dean Carter

Richard Dean Carter, 74, died April 27, 2013.

On January 31, 1939, Richard Dean Carter was born in a farmhouse in Cass County, Mich. to Lazelle and Grace (Kantz) Carter.

Dick graduated from Constantine High School in 1957 where he played football and began a lifelong enthusiasm for high school sports. At that time, he had a '57 Chevy convertible and his passion for cars was underway. While on a Methodist Youth Group hayride he met his wife Rosemary Young of Sturgis, Mich. He would later claim that she left her blanket in his car on purpose to see him again, as they were dating other people at the time. They were married on May 28, 1960.

After they were married, they moved to Vacaville, Calif. where he served four years in the U.S. Air Force. In 1964, his son Randy was born in California. During his time in California, Dick's love of cars, restoration and custom painting show cars grew. However, the distance between family drew him back to Constantine to raise his family. During this time, Dick completed his tool and die apprenticeship at Excel in Elkhart. He also started Dick's Custom Painting out of his garage on South Washington Street. His daughter Robyn was born in 1967.

Later, he purchased his shop in Union and operated his business throughout the 70s. After Excel, he worked at Armstrong Musical Instruments and later moved to Armstrong Machine Works in Three Rivers, Mich. where he retired on June 1, 2004.

His hobbies grew to include photography in the mid 80s. His subject matter later evolved to photographing athletic teams posed as well as capturing action shots of all sports with football his favorite. Many of his pictures have been printed in both the Sturgis Journal and the Three Rivers Commercial newspapers. He loved the sports and the action, captured many weddings, graduations and reunions as well. His love of photography and photojournalism he shared with his daughter Robyn who worked as a reporter/photographer.

Over the last 24 years, visiting Robyn and her family in Alaska was always a highlight in his life. He photographed everything, from flowers to mountains, warehouses, boats and icebergs. Eating fresh halibut beer bits and smoked salmon were at the top of his Alaskan list of things to do.

Surviving are his wife Rosemary Carter, Constantine; son Randal (Kathy) Carter of Caledonia, Mich ., and their children Ryan and Katrina; daughter Robyn (Karl) Hagerman of Petersburg, and their children Kyle, Tucker and Tatum Hagerman; brother Robert (Marsha) Carter, Crystal Lake, Ill. and their children Jason Carter and Jill Stanley.

Interment was in the Constantine Township Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Constantine Athletic Boosters. Online messages may be left for the family at
