Fourth of July activities will quickly be upon the community and Petersburg Chamber of Commerce is gearing up for a great celebration.
Petersburg Parks and Recreation placed three themes for the event on its website for voting by the community.
The themes were: America Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow, Old Values Plus New Ideals and Remember Why it’s the Fourth of July.
Remember Why it’s the Fourth of July was the winner of this community-wide vote and will be the theme for this year's event.
“I am hoping to see lots of tea party floats and decorations,” Petersburg Chamber of Commerce Director Sally Dwyer said. “Maybe there could be several costumes of period dress, Betsy Ross sewing Old Glory, or our National Guard guys marching and reminding us of what the Fourth is all about.”
The Petersburg Fourth of July events always include log rolling in the Middle Harbor, along with the tote races and the blindfolded boat race, the egg toss and two by six stomp.
“The biggest event for this celebration is the fireworks show,” Dwyer stated. “We have begun fundraising efforts to pay for this show and SEAPA has already donated $1,000 toward our $6,000 goal.”
Dwyer is also hoping that the Borough will match its donations in the past of $1,500.
“Every year, our group of volunteer pyro technicians, who are licensed by the state, provide a beautiful Fourth of July show for us,” Dwyer said. “They also build a customized set piece that is blown at the end of the show. This big board, that is designed in a different shape every year, can only be seen from ground level.”
The volunteers for the show include Dave Berg, Tom Laurent and Dan Bird. The fireworks show will take place at the ball field.
“This year we are working to figure out a solution for the parking problem for the show,” Dwyer said. “The Chamber of Commerce Board and Parks and Recreation are working together to plan shuttle service from different locations across the community.”
The main parking area for the shuttle service, at this time, is the parking lot at the pool but more details regarding the shuttle service will be available as they are planned.
“The downtown booth map and forms are available at the Petersburg Visitor's Center,” Dwyer said. “Anyone wanting to sign up for a booth can do so now and we will be working around the construction.”
According to Dwyer, the annual parade will still take place but the route is still undetermined due to construction.
“A schedule of events will be made available as soon as possible,” Dwyer said.
