Sandy Beach shelter razed last weekend

Petersburg Borough Parks and Recreation demolished shelter #2 at Sandy Beach Park last weekend. The shelter was rebuilt in the 1970s and rotted roof beams and decay in other portions of the shelter justified the razing of the structure, according to Parks and Rec Director Donnie Hayes.

Hayes said the shelter rebuild target completion date is this fall, but added work will be accomplished as staff is able to schedule work during the busy summer.

The rebuild is funded by a $45,000 state grant with the borough contributing staff labor to match the state funding.

The rebuild project will upgrade lighting inside the shelter when clear plastic roofing will be alternated with metal roofing. “We’ll also extend the roofline a couple of feet towards the beach so park guests will have more dry area when food is served at the Rotary Seafood BBQ each spring,” according to Hayes.

Minor changes will be made to the chimney structure and additional reinforcement will be added as well.
