Petersburg’s high school girl’s volleyball squad fell to the two time defending state champions of Mount Edgecumbe in Sitka last weekend.
Coach Jaime Cabral said despite the defeat the young team showed a lot of promise.
“We were a little bit intimidated against a very strong team,” Cabral said. “But our girls played extremely hard and extremely well.”
Sophomore setter Ruby Brock ended up with 20 assists over the weekend and Cabral commended middle blockers Adanna Kvernvik and Kyla Willis.
“Our freshmen also did a nice job stepping up,” Cabral said.
Freshman Emma Chase, Chandler Strickland and Hana Newman all played varsity games over the weekend.
Cabral said his young team is gaining a lot of experience so far and already displays natural ability.
“We have one of the most athletic teams in the Southeast,” Cabral said. “Now we just have to turn them into volleyball players.”
The final scores on Friday night were 25-9 and 25-12. Saturday’s scores were 25-15, 15-15 and 25-12.
The Vikings will take on the Sitka High School squads this weekend. The games will be on Friday and Saturday at 6:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
