Vikings take home accolades from Juneau tournament

The Petersburg Vikings volleyball teams traveled to Sitka for conference games and Juneau for a tournament last week.

Head Coach Jaime Cabral said although the girls didn’t win last Wednesday’s and Thursday’s conference games, they had every game in their hands.

The team held the lead several times and the each game was close.

The varsity team headed to Juneau and won games against Sitka, Ketchikan and Thunder Mountain during the tournament.

“All of a sudden the tides have turned and I think the switch clicked on for our girls,” Cabral said. “It was a fantastic weekend where we were playing well and keeping the ball in and making kills and making plays.”

Cabral said the girls showed a great display of offensive plays. Middles Kyla Willis and Dana Kvernvik scored several kill shots and outsides Catherine Cardenas and Kylie Wallace powered through with offense. Cabral said Ruby Brock has been steady all year with her setting.

“We are really young but growing up fast,” Cabral said.

Cabral said as the team approaches the tail end of its season they need to continue to work on decreasing unforced errors—losing points to out of bound or net shots.

Sophomore Kylie Wallace also made the all tournament team—a selection of the top ten players in the tournament.

Eight out of nine Vikings also made the all-academic team—players whose GPAs are higher than 3.4.

The next home game is against Thunder Mountain on October 25 and 26.
