Two Viking wrestlers dominate finals match in Wrangell

DJ Toyomura of Petersburg attempts to pin Deidre Creed of Mount Edgecumbe during the final round of the 106-lb weight class tournament during the Tom Sims Invitational Saturday in Wrangell. Toyomura won by fall at 1:36, and took home the trophy.

The Viking Wrestling team took fourth place in a tournament in Wrangell last weekend.

Head Coach Dan Van Swearingen said the team as a whole was much more aggressive last weekend than in their first tournament of the season.

"We were punishing some of our opponents," Van Swearingen said. "I like to see that."

DJ Toyomura beat a returning region champion and pinned him in the first round.

Billy Ware walked through his final 14-1.

The coach said two of his better wrestlers didn't attend the tournament.

The coach said his team is progressing well and he looks forward to the rest of the season...
