Freshman Chandler Strickland scores a point for the Vikings against Mount Edgecumbe.
The Vikings volleyball team played its final home games against Thunder Mountain last weekend. Although the Vikings lost its matches they put up a tough fight against the Juneau squad.
Head coach Jaime Cabral said the two seniors put up great defensive plays and the rest of the young team-made up of freshmen and sophomores-are progressing well.
"We couldn't have asked for as much hard work as they've put in," Cabral said. "They've done everything that we've asked."
The Vikings haven't taken home many wins this season but Cabral said the challenge of taking what were mostly young basketball players and turning them into volleyball players has been met.
"The first weekend was rough," Cabral said. "I knew it was going to be a little different from the get-go. They're the youngest team I've ever had. But they're turning the corner and looking like volleyball kids. The future is bright with this crew. It's exciting."
The team will travel to Sitka this weekend for its final play of the season at regionals.
The Junior Varsity team won its matches last weekend.
