Chief Kelly Swihart said a promotion board made up of himself, Captain John Hamilton, Borough Manager Steve Giesbrecht and Sergeant Joel Smith from the Wasilla Police Department evaluated four candidates during the review process.

"We took a three pronged approach to get a good solid evaluation," Swihart said. "The scores were tighter than I expected. It wasn't an easy decision for the board to make the recommendation."

Those up for promotion took a written test, submitted a resume and cover letter and participated in an oral board interview.

Kerr arrived in Petersburg last June with his wife and two children. He worked for a police and sheriffs department in Arizona since 2004.

"I'm excited about the new opportunities provided to me and excited to serve the community," Kerr said.

As sergeant, Kerr will take on a first line supervisory position and be in charge when Swihart and Hamilton aren't on duty.

The promotion takes effect January 1, 2104.
