Vikings top team in the region at state wrestling tournament
Stelmach wins his third match putting him in position for third and fourth place.
The Petersburg Viking wrestling squad took 9th place in the state tournament in Anchorage last weekend-ahead of every other Southeast team.
"We ended up in a good position," Assistant coach Ed May said. "We're very, very happy with the outcome."
Freshman Buddy Stelmach, wrestling in the 98-pound weight class, placed 4th in the tournament.
"It was pretty fun," Stelmach said. "There were a bunch of other kids up there that were a lot bigger and more experienced."
Stelmach broke his wrist early in the season but went on to place first at the regional tournament in Sitka two weeks ago.
DJ Toyomara also placed 4th at state in the 106-weight class.
John Brooks at 138 and Bret Martinsen at 145 placed 6th.
"There were no first places but we have a young team," May said. "It's a state tournament so it's always tough. We're looking forward to a returning year."
Head coach Dan Vanswearingen traveled to Anchorage from Montana where his wife recently had the couple's first child. He returned to Montana after the tournament.
The Vikings took second at the regional tournament in Sitka two weeks ago.
