Mayor's Report

During the Petersburg Borough Assembly’s Feb. 14 meeting, Mayor Mark Jensen reported the following:

On July 14, 2013, the Alaska Redistricting Board adopted new boundaries for the Alaska legislative house and senate districts. The Division of Elections adjusted the boundaries of existing voting precincts to align them with the legislative district boundaries. Petersburg Borough is in the Petersburg/Kupreanof Precinct. The Division of Elections is accepting comments on the proposed regulation changes until 4 p.m. March 3, 2014.

The Alaska Division of Forestry is preparing a draft forest management plan and is seeking public input about how people are using the state lands located within the Southeast State Forest. The state

legislature has designated four units on Mitkof Island including Frederick Point, Favor Peak, South Mitkof and Woodpecker for the purpose of timber production. DOF

will accept comments until March 3, 2014. Comments should be emailed to

james.schwarber@alaska.gov.

The University of Alaska intends to offer the opportunity to harvest timber on their Wrangell Narrows East parcel located on Mitkof Island approximately 14 miles southwest of Petersburg along the Wrangell Narrows, and on their South Mitkof Island parcel located approximately 29 miles southeast of Petersburg on Mitkof Highway. The total area for the Wrangell Narrows East parcel is approximately 368 acres of primarily western hemlock and Sitka spruce. The South Mitkof Island parcel, which includes tracts on and around Banana Point consists of 658 acres, 323 of which include old growth Sitka spruce, western hemlock and yellow cedar. The UA Board of Regents still needs to approve the sale.
