Petersburg's team gather around their Shamrock Soccer Tournament trophy last weekend in Juneau.

Petersburg soccer players took home championship trophies from the Shamrock Soccer Tournament held in Juneau last weekend.

This is the second year Petersburg athletes have competed in the coed tournament and Team Captain Joe Viechnicki was one of 12 soccer players who played.

The Petersburg team lost its first game but won the following five matches and got battered in the process.

Viechnicki hyperextended his knee. Brian Richards played on a badly sprained ankle and Shane Lohr played with an injured knee as well.

"We were all pretty dinged up and limping around," Viechnicki said. "I'm really proud of the team. They put forth and amazing effort."

The effort paid off in the championship game of the tournament which pit Petersburg against one of the several Juneau teams.

Petersburg was up 2-1 until a Juneau player scored in the final minute of the contest tying the score.

Petersburg player Thomas Cumps scored a final goal in overtime, which secured the Petersburg win.

Shane Lohr was named tournament male MVP.

It was very exciting and dramatic," Viechnicki said. "Myself and Brian were injured. We were kind of short staffed. It was a pretty exciting win and a gutsy performance by our team."

Shane Lohr was named the 'Tournament Male Most Valuable Player' for the second year in a row.

Brian Richards was awarded the 'Goalie of the Tournament' after scoring a point by head butting the ball from a corner kick to win game four.

Rick Mozolic, Marja Smets, Levy Boitor, Kaitlin DuRoss, Ashley DuRoss, Drew Ware, Orion Fenner and Alice Cumps also played for Petesrburg.

Julian Cumps and Rick Cumps were Petersburg's ball boys during the tournament.

Petersburg took third place during last year's tournament.
