Kowalski dives to steal second base in the second inning of Thursday's game.

The Petersburg Vikings baseball team lost three bouts late in the game to Juneau last week.

Head Coach Jim Engell said he was pleased with his players batting game but they need to dial in their defense.

"I felt there were a lot of things we did well," Engell said. "The scores were lopsided but they don't necessarily reflect what the game was like. A lot of those (points) were either tacked on very late in the game or because we had too many walks."

The Vikings played a double-header Thursday afternoon.

Vince Kowalski pitched 6 innings during the first game.

"He had a good strike to walk ratio and threw a lot of first ball strikes, which is something we really try to emphasize as working ahead in the count versus trying to catch up," Engell said.

Kowalski gave up five runs, four of them earned. His current total earned run average is 2.69 after 13 innings of pitching this season.

The Vikings were down 2-1 in the 6th inning and Juneau tacked on most of their points in the 7th inning. The Vikings lost 1-7.

Juneau had seven hits and Petersburg had three hits.

Petersburg fought back with an early lead of 2-0 in the first inning during the second game of the afternoon.

But during the second half of the inning Petersburg gave up four points by walks.

"The name of that game was that we gave up too many walks," Engell said. "We struggled trying to match the umpires strike zone."

Kowalski hit a homerun during the game. The score was 9-4 Juneau mid game but again the Vikings lost late in the game

17-4.

Kjell Wittstock pitched the majority of Friday's game. Jesse Lantiegne had several hits, and a bunt from Chauncy Sandhofer let runners move to second and third base.

Petersburg had seven hits and Juneau had eight hits but Juneau won 15-2.

"We know we can compete," Engell said. "We know that team's beatable but we have to reduce our errors and walks."

The Vikings head to Ketchikan to play three games this weekend.
