Petersburg resident and little league umpire Ted Sandhoffer is heading to San Bernardino, Calif. in August to umpire the Western Regional Little League Tournament.
Sandhoffer has been a volunteer umpire for more than ten years. He has participated in a Southeast District tournament and two state Little League tournaments in Anchorage-requirements for umpiring in the Little League regional tournaments.
Little League District Administrator and Petersburg resident Duane Bell nominated Sandhoffer for the position and he was later selected.
The Western Regional tournament will determine which teams from Alaska, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, California, Hawaii, Nevada, Utah and Arizona go on to play in the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Penn.
"Those teams play round robin, and after that's done, the two top seeds play a single elimination to find out who is the winner of each of those regions that go on to Williamsport," Sandoffer said. "You (umpires) get two or three games each day. You just rotate around the field. It should be interesting."
After umpiring in the tournament, he will be eligible to participate in the Little League World Series, a feat that can take two decades before being accepted.
