The great blue heron

Flying overhead near Petersburg Creek on Kupreanof Island, this heron casts an impressive shadow with its six and a half foot wingspan. Unlike the well know sandhill cranes which migrate through SE Alaska by the hundreds of thousands, the great blue heron is a year-round resident feeding mostly on small fish and nesting along the shores of creeks and rivers.
