Veterans were honored for their service around town Tuesday, Nov. 11 in celebration of Veterans Day. Students from the elementary, middle and high schools as well as many community members attended an assembly at the high school Tuesday morning. Honored veterans sat front and center with family members to listen to speeches and music performed by students of all ages.

The audience was treated to information ranging from the historical background of the holiday given by the high schoolers to personal stories of family members who've served given by the Stedman Elementary Student Council.

High School Principal Rick Dormer also led an activity to illustrate the impact of veterans' service on the lives of local community members. Beginning with the Revolutionary war, Dormer asked audience members to stand and remain standing when they heard a war in which a relative has served. By the time he announced the current War on Terror, nearly the entire audience was standing.

"Look around. There's the impact that veterans have had on our community, in some capacity. Whether it's an uncle, an aunt, a father, a mother, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-grandmother, nearly everyone in this room is representing a veteran," Dormer said.

Other events held around town included a meet-and-greet with veterans in long-term care at the hospital Tuesday afternoon. The Elks Lodge also hosted a dinner for veterans and their families on Tuesday evening.
