Muskeg Maleriers (from left) Cathy Harris, Naomi Welde, Arlana Corl, Carol Stedman, Linda McKay and Sally Dwyer painted a traditional rosemaling sign last Thursday to be displayed onsite at a sport fish cleaning dock at Tonka Seafoods. The cleaning dock is grant-funded through the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, which administers the Southeast Alaska Chinook Salmon Fishery Mitigation Program grant for commercial trollers and sportfishermen. The grant program aims to offset economic impacts of a 2009 adjustment to Chinook harvest levels in the region done as part of the Pacific Salmon Treaty Agreement. Tonka received about $298,000 in grant funds last year. Tonka co-owner Seth Scrimsher said progress on the station was halted as winter weather set in, but he expects work on the facility to be completed this March.
