School board meets after short break

The school board met in the high school library Tuesday night, after taking July off. The board also took a tour of summer improvements with director of maintenance Dan Tate before the meeting.

Tate showed off and

talked about the school’s new carpet, changes to a few

classrooms and projects still in the works. School board

members were excited about the improvements done over the summer, especially

the new LED lighting installed in the school’s shop.

The tour ended at the

elementary school with Tate talking about the new rock garden and cafeteria improvements.

The meeting was

brief because of a short agenda. The board unanimously

passed FY 2018 capital improvement projects or CIP list with the top three priorities of funding the boiler replacement in the middle school and high school, and renovations to the district’s food service program.

School board president Sarah Holmgrain read the

board goals, which started with the desire to prepare

students for post secondary education and career

opportunities. Another top

priority is increasing student representation with the Petersburg School Board,

and public input and

involvement in school governance, including finding more committee participants. The board also wants to continue supporting the positive behavior of students in the district.

School Superintendent

Erica Kludt-Painter gave her superintendent goals,

including one to improve communication with the board by providing weekly or bi-weekly updates on

accomplishments or upcoming events. Kludt-Painter made a point to continue the use of student assessments and data available to help with instruction. She also wants to keep working on the district’s new hire packets.

“We need to do a

better job of orienting people when they come to the district,” she said.

There are two vacant

seats the school board is looking to fill in the Oct. 4 municipal election. For anyone interested, the two seats are each three year terms, and the last day to file for an open seat is Aug. 23.
