August 25: Sunday and Monday on the Stikine River saw the highest river levels of the year, with the gauge reading over 26 feet at it’s peak. For the first time of the season boaters could dock at the lower level recreational hot tubs. (photo courtesy of Jenn Hansen)

 

August 18: A large pod of Orcas moved through Frederick Sound from Cape Strait to Fanshaw Bay. The pod numbered as large as 20 animals ranging from large Alpha males to very small calves. The group appears to be a local pod based upon the markings on their saddle patches. The Orcas remained in the Sound for nearly a week in mid-august feeding on numerous Coho salmon in the area.

June 30: LeConte Bay, usually filled with thick brash ice, loosened up on Tuesday, allowing closer access to the glacier face. Despite overcast skies, visitors to the bay got an up-close view of the wall of ice. (Photo by Ron Loesch)

May 2011

May 26: Mitkof Middle School 8th graders constructed hot air balloons out of tissue paper in preparation for launching them on Wednesday May 25. The balloons, made of glue and paper traveled hundreds of feet into the air before returning to earth, some landing in precarious positions. In the past, teacher Jo Ann Day said some balloons have made it to Kupreanof. On Wednesday, Skipper Erickson retrieved his balloon from 7th and Fram. “I thought it flew really well,” he said. “It looked like it was going to hit some trees or land on a house but it landed in the intersection.” (Photo by Keith Chaplin)

April 28: Ben Zarlengo, Kyle Hagerman and Abil Johnson sort through trash on Earth Day, Friday April 22 as part of a project to analyze trash content. April 21: A pair of deer took the rare opportunity to walk out underneath the Ocean Beauty pier during Tuesday’s -3.9 foot low tide. The low tide left some boats in the Petersburg North Harbor high and dry. According to the Alaska Tide Book Company 2011 tide tables, the 8:52 a.m. low tide was the lowest tide in Petersburg for the year. The next lowest tide will take place Wednesday May 11 at 8:38 a.m. when tides will drop to -3.8 feet. (Photo by Keith Chaplin)

 

 

April 14: Petersburg High School’s Concert Band performed Tuesday night under the direction of Matt Lenhard. The evening’s music also included performances by the Concert Choir and Jazz Band. April 7: Traffic was halted near downtown Petersburg last week as DOT crews from Northern Region Bridge Maintenance replaced the expansion joints on the Louis Miller Bridge over Hammer Slough. The crew chiseled out the joints and re-welded new brackets, as old metal brackets had become extremely thin from wear and tear, or had been damaged by plows. Work is expected to finish this week. January 27: The City of Petersburg and the Alaska Department of Transportation will hold a public meeting Monday, Jan. 31 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. to discuss plans for replacing sidewalks, resurfacing deteriorating roads, repairing drainage and other work on Main street, Dolphin, Excel and Harbor Way as early as this summer. The project team will answer questions and discuss preliminary plans for the project. The meeting will be held in the city council chambers. October 28: Local high school Art Teacher Ashley DuRoss presents the youth and community mural, “United Hands,” during the annual Oktoberfest activities on Saturday, October 23. The mural spans 48 ft across and ten feet tall. DuRoss and students worked on the mural project in the mat room at Petersburg High School. Production took three months beginning on March 30, 2010 and was finished on May 31, 2010. “I was satisfied with the community turnout on Saturday and it seems as though the mural brought the sun out for us,” said DuRoss, with a smile. Jackson accomplished the feat in 13 years and constructed a bridge at Sandy Beach Park as his community service project. In order to become an Eagle Scout, a scout must achieve 21 merit badges. January 14: Devil’s Thumb greeted the New Year under the glow of a rare blue moon, when there are two full moons in the same month. The time this lunar event occurs is Agust 31, 2012.

 

January 14 : Mike and Barb Luhr made history last year when both were named state presidents of their respective organizations, The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks and the Alaska State Association of Emblem Clubs.
