Contested elections for city council, harbor board

Robert Monteith

August 28, 2008.

The deadline passed for candidates to file for city elections Tuesday evening and the race is on for two available city council seats. Both Dan Hickman and John Havrilek have decided not to run for reelection and four residents have made a bid for their spots. Paul Anderson, Lee Corrao, James M. Demko Jr., and Sara Stoner will each make a bid for the three year position.

Both Jean Ellis and Randy Lantiegne will run for the two available seats on the school board. The two candidates were appointed to the school board to fill vacancies and have decided to continue their public service.

Three people will be competing for two spots on the hospital board. Darcy Judy, Kristine Kissinger, and Timothy Koeneman will each be seeking a three year term.

Sidney Bacom and Elbert Hardin will both run unopposed for two open seats on the Public Safety Advisory Board.
Pamalyn Duvall is the only candidate for two open spots on the planning commission.

Julie Hursey and Alec R. McMurren have filed for two open spots on the library advisory board.

Only two spots are available for three candidates on the Harbor and Ports Advisory Board. Jeff Berg, John Havrilek, and Harold Medalen will each compete for a spot. The open seat for a one year term failed to attract a candidate, however.

The utility advisory board will have two candidates running unopposed for the available seats. Rick Braun and Nancy Strand both filed for election.

Two seats on the Parks and Rec Advisory Board and a two year term on the Utility Advisory Board failed to attract any candidates.

Citizens can still file as write in candidates at city hall. The election will take place October 7.
