Traditionally herring eggs on hemlock branches was the way to go. The branches with eggs are dipped into boiling water. Pulled off the branch they are then dipped into butter and soy sauce then eaten. The eggs "pop" in your mouth, so often have nicknames like popcorn or crunchies.
