Scores of community members gathered within the Sons of Norway hall on Wednesday night to enjoy the 49th annual Petersburg Pickled Herring Contest. Four tables hosted dozens of different competing dishes in four categories. Pickled Herring, pickled fish and seafood, smoked salmon, and smoked cured fish were first sampled by a handful of appointed judges for each individual category. After the judging, the winners gathered with their trophies. Pictured left to right are Jim Edgars first place for smoked salmon with Smoked Winter King, Sig Mathisen with a double-win in smoked cured fish with his gravlax and pickled herring with his south of the border sauced herring, Helmer Olson and Kurt Kvernvik were picked as a tie for best pickled fish and seafood, both entered their pickled black cod. Spectators at the contest waited unti the winners were named then helped themselves to the competitions delicious entries.
