Glacial calving occurs when large chunks of ice break off the edge of a glacier, crashing to the water from potentially quite high up. Even a small glacial calving like the one above, seen at LeConte Glacier on Friday, can create potentially hazardous waves. Sightseers should maintain a safe distance from the glacier's face.
