    The Region V 3A/4A Tournament started off tough for the Vikings on Wednesday with a game against Mt. Edgecumbe. Edgecumbe was seeded 3rd going into the tourney and had been one of the better teams in the league all season.     The Lady Vikings ended their season in Ketchikan last week at the Region V 3A/4A Tournament. Petersburg’s girls started tournament play on Wednesday with a game against Craig. The girls started out the game a little slow according to Lady Viking Head Coach Dino Brock.     The Vikings played their final home series of the season against the Metlakatla Chiefs last weekend. The Vikings pillaged the court during Friday night’s first quarter, outscoring the Chiefs 17-8. In the second period the Metlakatala boys cranked up their defensive pressure, effectively stopping Viking scoring for a solid four minutes.     The Lady Panthers of Craig came to town to face the Lady Vikings last weekend in the girls’ last home series of the season. On Friday the Craig ladies jumped out to an early lead and managed to maintain the lead throughout the game.     The Vikings had an outstanding weekend of boys basketball in Wrangell. Friday’s varsity game started with a first half where neither team really controlled the tempo of the game. Petersburg was ahead 11-8 at the end of the first period.     The Sitka Wolves prowled into Petersburg last weekend to challenge the Vikings boys basketball team. Sitka left with a handful of wins but the story is more interesting than the scores show.     Mt Edgecumbe’s Lady Braves came to town last weekend to face off with the Lady Vikings. Friday’s game was a triumph for the Petersburg girls. “It was our best game of the year,” said Vikings girls coach Dino Brock. “We played with a lot of confidence and focus.” After doing what Brock described as a better job of taking care of the basketball, getting into the offense and rebounding, the Lady Vikings finished the game 51-44.     Ketchikan hosted a basketball jamboree this weekend and the Petersburg Vikings gladly accepted their invitation to participate along with teams from Hydaburg and Prince Rupert.     An elderly man was hit by a vehicle while crossing the street at Gjoa and Nordic Drive on Tuesday night at about 4:40 p.m. EMT Dave Berg responded from his office at Viking Travel and summoned police and the ambulance to the scene. The man’s name was not released, but Berg told the Pilot the man was crossing inside the crosswalk and was apparently grazed by the vehicle’s mirror as it passed.     In keeping with a holiday sports tradition, last weekend the Vikings traveled to Ketchikan to participate in the Clarke Cochran Christmas Classic tournament. Games started on Tuesday the 27th of December when the Vikings played the team from Eatonville, Wash., a school of around 500 kids.
