February 24, 1914 – The Bill introduced in the House of Representatives by Hon. McKellar, which provides that fish kept in cold storage for more than two months cannot be shipped in interstate commerce is so worded that it would cover frozen and preserved as well as fresh fish. If this cold storage bill should go in its original form, it would be a great calamity to two of the largest industries on the North Pacific Coast-- that of mild-cured and frozen salmon. These products are packed in the main for export to Europe and unless a r...
February 21, 1914 – While the passing of the Alaska Railroad Bill was a foregone conclusion, yet, great was the strain and anxiety upon its supporters at the final vote. The galleries were full of spectators and excited Alaskans were to be noticed everywhere. The count of the vote showed that 230 had favored the project, while 87 voted against. Some were opposed to the whole bill, others favored some amendments. However, an amendment that was accepted that did away with the issue of bonds. The amendment provides a direct appropriation from the...
In January Rocky and Sue Flint turned the operation of their 33 year-old business, Rocky's Marine, Inc., over to their son Casey and his wife Holli. The business started in 1980 as a dealership for Suzuki outboards and Stihl chainsaws with Flint doing the mechanical work and wife Sue doing the bookkeeping while working a second job as a nurse at the local hospital. In 1983, Yamaha worked to expand their line of outboard engines to the United States and came to Petersburg in search of a dealer....
The Superior Court Judge’s ruling to grant a stay on the demolition of a Petersburg home, which the borough deemed as a dangerous building, left a few unanswered questions. The court was silent on the, “elephant in the room,” fact that the home has been sitting on the ground after falling off its foundation for nearly five years. The homeowners Fred Triem and Karen Ellingstad have had plenty of time to repair the foundation and restore their home to a stable footing on their Wrangell Avenue property. Efforts by the borough to push the proce...

Art and Jeanine Hammer's wedding anniversary is on tomorrow's Valentine's Day. Before meeting Jeanine during the summer of 1953, Art, nine years her senior, was used to the bachelor life. "I was just a loose, single guy doing a lot of hunting and fishing, just bumming around," Art said. Jeanine traveled to town with a friend whose sister was married to Art's brother. The pair met at a family dinner at Art's sisters house. They spent the following two weeks together. "We went out together," Art... Full story
February 14, 1914 – Returning Petersburgers from Seattle on the Admiral Sampson, have brought the unconfirmed, but hopeful news that the Pacific Coast & Norway Packing Company held its annual stockholders meeting, and that it was decided that machinery for sanitary cans was to be installed in the cannery this coming season. That was predicted last fall. It was said at the time that before the company could operate its plant successfully, sanitary cans would have to be used. This involved the expenditure of considerable money, and means a g...
The Petersburg Borough Assembly meets tomorrow (Feb. 14) at 12 p.m. in the assembly chambers. The assembly will hold a public hearing on the borough’s election ordinance. The ordinance maintains the current in-person election process. It will also hold a public hearing on updated criminal code that gives officers more discretion, allowing police to issue fines for certain low level crimes instead of making an arrest. The assembly will conduct its third and final reading of an updated hospital ordinance that outlines the hospital board’s aut...
February 7, 1914 – Everybody has heard about "fearless hunters," but very few have ever known one. The Petersburgers are fortunate however, in that they not only have heard about fearless hunters, but know two of them, they are Bob and Hans. If there is one kind of animal that those boys hate worse than another, it's the bear. On their last trip it appears that they had a trap set, when another kind of fool animal got its hind legs into it. On their next round from a distance, they saw s...
